Chemicals cause damage by bioaccumulation in the food chain and in our bodies. They are persistent, can pass on from mother to foetus and infant. They can cause developmental, mitochondrial and liver toxicity.
The health impacts of chemicals include asthma (1 in 4 children), autism (1 in 150 children on the spectrum), sky rocketing increase in Type II diabetes and obesity, developmental and reproductive disorders (1 in 6 couples diagnosed as infertile), sperm count decreasing 1% each year, increase in generalized immune diseases and increase in allergies and eczema.
Over 80,000 chemicals are now registered for use in Australia with 38,ooo of those chemicals been industrial chemicals. 75% of these chemicals have never been tested for their toxicity on the human body or the environment.
One of the most well known chemicals are phthalates as they mimic the bodies normal death inducing signaling in testicular cells causing abnormal cell death. Phthalates have been linked to hormone changes, lower sperm count, less mobile sperm, birth defects in the male reproductive system, obesity, diabetes and thyroid irregularities. To minimise your exposure to phthalates avoid plastic food containers, children’s toys, plastic wrap and personal care products that contain phthalates (avoid fragrance as an ingredient)
Pesticides on food are designed to kill and be effective at low doses. They attack central nervous system, immune system and cellular structures of life form. They pass through the body virtually unchanged and damage organs on their way through. Organochlorine pesticides were used in the 1950s and largely phased out by 1990. DDT was one of these pesticides. Organochlorine pesticides persist in the environment for a long period of time, bioaccumulate in the fat cells of humans, are toxic to the nervous system, are endocrine disrupting toxins. Pesticides used today are organophosphates are generally short-lived in the environment, do not tend to bio-accumulate, they are still toxic to the nervous system and are endocine/reproductive disrupting toxins.
A food allergy is a very specific immune system response from the immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibody or T-cells. An IgE reaction is easier to diagnosis as it comes on quickly occurring within minutes to an hour after touching, smelling or ingesting a particular food.
The treatment of a true IgE or T-cell immune response allergy is to avoid the allergen/food. Common food allergies include peanuts, fish, milk and eggs.
A food intolerance is a chemical reaction that does not involve the immune system. It is a lot more common than food allergies. Food intolerances are often tricky to diagnose because their reactions can be delayed and varied. Symptoms can include sweating, stomach, itching eyes and nose, excessive sneezing, headache, diarrhea, tremor and many more. IgA and IgG blood tests can help isolate which foods triggering reactions. Keeping a food diary to track reactions can be very helpful.
If you are interested in getting an IgA, IgG, IgE or ALCAT allergy testing done please get in contact with me. I use NutriPATH pathology in Melbourne. I have provided a link below to the tests they perform. The easiest way to use this website is to click on the health condition or goal on the right hand side panel.
Hypothyroid, hyperthyroid, Hashimoto thyroiditis, thyroid antibodies, Graves’ Disease, chances are yourself or somebody you know has one of these conditions. Why are they so common now when back in Robbins Pathology Textbook in 1967 it stated “diseases of the thyroid are not common in medical practice” Fast forward to 1995 research in the United States found 11.7% had abnormal thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) with significant increases in autoimmune thyroid conditions as well.
The thyroid has the most sensitive tissue out of all of the endocrine glands in your body and therefore easily disrupted by environmental, lifestyle and nutritional factors. Take heart if you are experiencing thyroid problems because there are SO MANY things you can do to help restore your thyroid back to good health! I have seen many people with thyroid problems and have had great success. If you are experiencing thyroid issues get onto it early as this is your best chance of overcoming it. It is very important to uncover your unique reasons for your thyroid problems, then remedy them!
Preconception Care, Pregnancy & Children
Preconception Care should ideally begin at least 4 months prior to trying to get pregnant. The reason for this is it takes the ova 3 months to mature and 2- 4 months for new healthier sperm to develop. What you would embark on is a detoxification program, identifying toxins and eliminating them, achieving a healthy body composition, access existing blood markers such as ferritin, then move onto building nutritional credit to give every opportunity for fertility, an uncomplicated pregnancy and a healthy baby.
Pregnancy I find it very exciting the number of ways in which natural medicine can help pregnant women. It is such a magical experience feeling to have life grow inside you. Enjoy your 9 months of movement towards becoming a mum to this new being. If you are suffering from morning sickness, gestational diabetes, low iron, low platelets, threatened miscarriage, pre-eclampsia, have allergies in your family and want to do your best to avoid passing it onto your newborn, stretch marks, GORD and many more… there are things you can do to help yourself!
Children what a gift it is to have a child! I love children and see them regularly in my clinic from simple treatments such as constipation/diarrhoea, allergies, reaccuring infections, asthma, fussy eaters, common intestinal parasites, otitis media, conjunctivitis, sleep problems, warts, UTIs and many more. Children normally respond quickly to treatment!
It amazes me how the weight loss theory of energy in must be less than energy expenditure equals weight loss has persisted in the weight loss industry for so long. This theory likens the body’s metabolism to a set of scales or a calculator. Our bodies are SO much more complicated than this. A more precise description is to see the body as a thermostat.
Anybody who has embarked on a eat less, exercise more weight loss program knows after 4-10 days of doing this your metabolism goes into chaos triggering hunger, cravings and low erratic energy. It is not possible to loss and keep weight off on will power alone.
Statistics tracking weight loss contestants found that of the 95% of people that finish their diet regained all of the weight that they had lost in the first 12 months, with 60% of the 95% gaining the weight back they lost plus more weight. The tip to avoid this from happening to you is to maintain your basal metabolic rate as you are losing weight.
There is an abundance of weight loss programs on the market available to choose from. From a Naturopathic view point always start your weight loss program with nutrition dietary changes first not exercise to balance metabolism. Make adjustments so that the hunger, cravings and low erratic energy feedback you are receiving from your metabolism are in balance.
When you embark on an exercise weight loss program do the least amount of exercise possible to get the result you are after. The reason for this is once you are at your desired weight you will have to maintain the exercise you did plus some more exercise to keep your weight off.
Millions of women worldwide know what it feels like to have mood swings, irritability, anger, nervous tension, breast tenderness, bloating, headaches among other symptoms leading up to their period. The actual symptoms are caused by low progesterone in the second half of your cycle. Herbal medicines such as Chaste Tree can work beautifully to help relieve PMS .
Oestrogen Dominance and Flaxseeds
If you suffer from breast pain, PMS, irregular bleeding, fluid retention, headaches, blood sugar problems, heaving menstruation, weight gain, sleep disturbances, nausea and/or thyroid problems you could be suffering from oestrogen excess.
It is possible to get a blood test or serum saliva test done through your doctor or naturopath to discover your levels of oestrogen, progesterone and the ratio between the two.
If you do find that you are oestrogen dominant there are many herbal remedies and supplements you can take to modify your hormonal profile. One of the best dietary solutions to excess oestrogen is flaxseeds. 10mg per day lower serum levels of oestrogen over time. Buy whole linseeds from the supermarket and ground them yourself, keep in the fridge and consume within one week. The already ground linseeds are rancid and are therefore low in nutrition.
Some women breeze through menopause and their only sign of them having gone through it is when their period stops. Other women suffer terribly from hot flushes, night sweats, body aches and pains, depression, decreased libido, forgetfulness, headaches, UTIs, sleep disturbances and so on. These symptoms are all caused by the decrease in oestrogen in the blood. The average age of menopause is 51 years old, is a natural part of a woman’s life and the symptoms can be managed with natural medicines.
I have a personal history with skin and understand the misery that inflamed skin can cause to your overall wellbeing. Trying to locate what foods, environmental exposure, emotions, unbalanced body systems could be causing your skin problem can take some time to work out. The skin is one of the body’s three main elimination challenges, the other two been the bowel and kidneys. Skin is directly affected by how well these elimination channels are working along with the health of your digestive system, liver, hormonal system, your sleep pattern, medications and so on. Uncovering which system(s) is causing your skin imbalance is the place to begin.
There are a variety of herbal medicines, supplements and dietary changes that can do wonders to improving overall skin health whether it be you suffer from atopic or contact dermatitis, acne vulgaris or rosacea, skin infections, psoriasis, acne caused by coming off the pill and warts.
Iridology Tongue Nails Dx
The use of Iridology dates back to 1000BC where the Chaldeans of Babylonia depicted the iris and its relationship to the body in carved stone slabs. Hippocrates taught iris diagnosis at his medical school. Iridology continued to evolve over the years with the greatest contributor Bernard Jensen from America. He tracked, recorded and created the Iridology chart most commonly used today. It truly is fascinating what your eyes can reveal about you.
Tongue diagnosis has been used for thousands of years in China. The tongue can give very clear indications of the state of your health based on it’s shape, size, texture, coating, colour and blood vessels under the tongue. For example a normal tongue should have an even coating that is slightly white and thin. If the tongue’s coating is yellowish, either thick or not, there is internal inflammation, congestion and excessive energy or function.
Nails are made from protein (keratin) they rely on a wide range of vitamins, minerals and fats to grow strong and healthy. Nails can give important insight into your nutritional status, digestive and general state of health. For example white spots can be a sign of calcium or zinc deficiency whilst pronounced vertical ridging can be a deficiency of silica, iron and B vitamins.
In consultation we combine your iridology reading, tongue and nail diagnosis in conjunction with recent blood tests or x-rays to piece together a picture of your current state of health. Eyes, tongue and nails all provide clues about your digestive health, genetic history, past medical history and helps to hone your treatment program back to better health.
